About Funza Lushaka

The Funza Lushaka Bursary Programme supports students to complete a teaching degree in South Africa. Recipients are required to teach at public schools for the duration of the bursary received.

Funza Lushaka Bursary 2024

Applications must be submitted online each year. Recipients teach at assigned public schools based on priority needs.

The bursary covers:

  • Tuition fees
  • Accommodation with meals
  • Books and learning materials
  • A small allowance for living expenses

Application Guidelines:

  • Online applications only; no hard copies accepted.
  • Print and submit the completed application to the university.
  • Not eligible: Applicants with criminal records, HEI employees and families, and those with existing teaching qualifications.

Eligible Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate: 4-year Bachelor of Education (B Ed) specializing in various phases.
  • Graduate: 1-year Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) with priority in specific subjects.

Priority Areas:

  • Foundation Phase (Grades R-3) – Preference for African Languages.
  • Intermediate and Senior Phase (Grades 4-9) – Preference for Languages, Mathematics, Natural Science & Technology.
  • FET Phase (Grades 10-12) – Preference for subjects like Accounting, Agricultural Sciences, Mathematics, Physical Sciences, etc.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • South African citizen with good academic performance.
  • Accepted for a teaching degree or PGCE at an accredited public university.
  • Dedication to teaching, personal integrity, and readiness to handle challenges.

For New University Entrants:

  • Proof of admission and matric results with minimum level 4 ratings in relevant subjects.

For Current University Students:

  • Passed all modules in the last year with a minimum 55% average.

For PGCE Applicants:

  • Completed a recognized qualification with priority subjects at the second-year level.

  1. Visit www.eservices.gov.za.
  2. Register or login.
  3. Complete and submit the online application.
  4. Print and apply to the university with certified copies of your ID and academic records.

Important Notice:

  • Seek other funding options like NSFAS.
  • Selection results are available by 30 April each year.
  • Late applications are not considered.
  • Updating application details is allowed before the closing date.
